went to the fillmore last night to see jeff tweedy's solo set. it was one of the best shows i've been to. ever.first, glenn kotche - the drummer of wilco - played a set. the guy i was with asked if it was going to be just an hour of drum solos... and it was... kinda. but omg. not the dorky rock n roll solos. this guy is TALENTED. he modified his kit with different sounding bells & cymbals, he pulled tubes and strings to create the sounds of the jungle in an amazing song called “The Monkey Chant for Solo Drumset”. holy shit. blew me away. and the song started by him opening about a dozen boxes of cricket sounds. you know, those annoying noisemakers sold everywhere in Chinatown that when you open the box, you get the chirping sound... but here, they just sounded awesome. so anyway. his cd comes out march 7th. i'm buying it.
then jeff came out. just him and his guitars. brilliant. seeing him like this, you get to really hear & feel the lyrics. he was in a good space too. bantering w/ the audience, telling stories. a hilarious one about an employee at Amoeba. and he sang songs from his whole catalogue. when he sang "Gun" from "Still Feel Gone", i teared up. that one really reminds me of my old buddy Thad. i haven't heard Uncle Tupelo songs live well, since the Paradise in boston in like, 1994? Anyway, despite the fact that my back was killing me (stupid car accident), i left this show with a huge grin.
oh, and some wonderful person put up a banner on northbound 101 near San Rafael that read, "Osama Bin Forgotten".
